DIRECTOR'S NOTE:
Napoleon Hill said, “Every adversity carries with it a seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.” He could have been speaking of this cast. The creation of this piece came about because we were informed one week before the start of rehearsals that we wouldn’t receive rights to perform Twilight Los Angeles: 1992, our original choice. With little time left, we applied for rights to another play, Notes From The Field, for which we were also denied performance rights.
As things would go, we lost seven cast members including two rappers and two singers. I immediately went in search of new actors, new singers, and new rappers. I found four actors, one singer, and one rapper. Mix them in with the 12 actors who chose to continue with our mission, not knowing what piece we would perform, I could just say “God is Good. Thank you, Lord.” It was a start.
Add to all that, this pandemic, the accompanying restrictions, as well as being the first play to perform live in front of an audience here at ELAC in two years. Surprisingly, obstacles kept popping up. I decided on the subject of Active Shootings because of their regularity. The problem...we were going to open in seven weeks and we didn’t have a script.
The most incredible part in all this is that the cast met for the first time three weeks ago, armed with their script, and ready to share with their fellow ensemble members the words you will hear today. It was inspiring for me to see the work they had put in individually with both writing and memorization. And to bring it all together with an amazing design team in such a short time, well I am proud of everyone who is responsible for making this happen and believe you will be too. These are special stories. This is a special group.
Enjoy the show.
